Low Cost Energy Storage Solutions for Electricity and Industrial Applications

Power Plant Solutions

Our concrete thermal energy storage technology turns conventional power plants into flexible energy storage resources, providing a new life for plants that would otherwise be retired.

In addition to turning legacy plants into “batteries”, thermal energy storage can also be used to optimize operations, decrease costs, and reduce emissions as these facilities adapt to changing dispatch schedules imposed by increasing renewable penetration:

FlexJoule

Lowest Cost Electricity Storage

The FlexJoule system combines a resistive heater, Storworks’ low-cost energy storage, and the steam turbine of an existing power plant to charge from excess energy and generate electricity during periods of peak demand pricing. The FlexJoule system turns an under-utilized or retiring steam plant (coal or gas fired) into a utility-scale battery at a price significantly below Lithium Ion batteries or other energy storage systems.

Operating facilities can use excess renewable energy from the grid in a “dual fuel” configuration, using grid power when economical to decrease their operating cost and emissions, while increasing revenue and flexibility.

Unlimited Duration Energy Storage

Retired plants can easily be configured in a “+Hybrid” configuration, allowing the plant to also run on conventional fuels or clean hydrogen/renewable natural gas for unlimited operation in the few annual events where ultra-long duration energy storage is needed - critical for grid reliability and capacity planning.

Because Storworks BolderBlocs are fully modular, systems can be designed from 10-250+ megawatts, and from 4 to 24+ hours of storage.

FlexOps

Energy Storage to Optimize Plant Operations

The FlexOps suite encompasses a range of customized energy storage solutions to enhance the operations of thermal power plants. Storworks BolderBlocs can be charged by steam or waste heat, and the system can be used to shift generation to meet demand, decrease emissions and water use, shorten ramp times, minimize restarts, reduce operating costs, avoid fuel burn during times of low market prices, and increase max capacity.

Because Storworks BolderBlocs are fully modular, solutions can be designed to meet the unique requirements of each operating environment. FlexOps solutions can enhance the economics and environmental profile of plants across the energy sector, including coal, gas, CHP, geothermal, nuclear, and concentrated solar.

Industrial Solutions

We provide on-demand high-quality heat and steam for industrial processes, utilizing renewable energy to decarbonize production at the lowest possible cost.

Our energy storage can provide firming for renewable energy and can turn fixed-demand loads into flexible assets able to purchase grid power at optimal prices, providing a low-cost decarbonization pathway:

FlexHeat

Energy Storage for Industrial Decarbonization

The FlexHeat system charges with electricity and/or waste heat and provides on-demand high quality heat and steam at a range of temperatures and pressures needed for a wide array of industrial processes. As plants move toward renewable energy, the FlexHeat system provides a low-cost way to firm renewable energy input and provide 24/7 heat and steam from variable renewable energy. The FlexHeat system can operate in a “+Hybrid” configuration, using natural gas, hydrogen, or RNG, ensuring that heat and steam will always be available to critical industrial processes.

For plants that draw power from the electrical grid and buy renewable energy credits, FlexHeat allows plants to procure electricity at times where the price is lowest and turns the plant load into a flexible demand resource.

FlexHeat provides a critical link between renewable energy and industrial processes, decreasing cost while increasing reliability.
